Built from locally sourced granite and enriched with fine regional timber, the house pays tribute to the architectural heritage of the Douro through the use of carefully selected natural materials and the craftsmanship of master artisans who preserve techniques and knowledge handed down through generations. The name Domus Valentes is deeply rooted in our family history and pays tribute to our 19th-century ancestor, Valentim, whose memory has endured through six generations as a symbol of courage, dignity, and perseverance. The people of the village affectionately called him Valente (“the Brave”), and over time that name became part of our family identity. Since then, all of his descendants have been known as the Valentes.
By choosing this name, we wished to preserve a legacy that extends far beyond a family surname. Domus means home, but it also evokes the ideas of refuge, belonging, and heartfelthospitality. Valentes represents those who face life with courage and determination, honouring their values and their origins.
This house was created to preserve that memory and to share it with all who visit us. Every stone, every detail, and every view across the village reflects a profound respect for a past that continues to live in the present.
